Kenyatta's love of books began at the age of seven. She found joy in reading works by Mildred D. Taylor and Judy Blume, and spending time at her local library sparked a lifelong passion for literature. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a librarian or owning a bookstore. Although her career path evolved over the years, her love for books never wavered.
Driven by that passion, Kenyatta founded the SistaGirl Book Club in Chesapeake, Virginia, with a mission to bring together like-minded African American women who share a love of reading while celebrating and supporting African American authors. The club quickly gained momentum, leading to the creation of sister chapters in Monroe, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia.
In 2009, Kenyatta's dedication to literacy and community earned recognition when Michael Baisden's team invited SistaGirl Book Club to become an official reporting book club. Building on that success, she opened The Book Nook in 2014, which was later renamed Riches In Reading Books. Although the physical bookstore closed in 2017 following her relocation, Riches In Reading continues to thrive as an online bookstore, offering a carefully curated selection of books that uplift, educate, and inspire readers.
Today, Kenyatta remains committed to promoting African American literature, with a special focus on supporting self-published authors. She is also the author of the children's book My Skin Is Beautiful, a heartwarming celebration of self-love, confidence, and cultural pride. Autographed copies are available through Riches In Reading, and the book is available wherever books are sold.
My Skin Is Beautiful is a children's picture book about Monay, a little girl with eczema who changes outfits again and again before a birthday party to feel comfortable in her own skin. With the help of her best friend Josslyn and caring adults, Monay learns practical ways to manage flare-ups and discovers that her skin, and her story, are still strong, special, and beautiful.
